WFTV Channel 9 meteorologist Brian Shields warned that a severe thunderstorm warning is now in place for Volusia County in Florida.
He tweeted: “Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Volusia - Large hail possible! Stay indoors and away from windows in Ormond Beach!
“On this Thanksgiving, Florida has the worst weather in the country! It's a stormy mess across much of Florida on this Thanksgiving!”
The latest rain radar shows celebrations could be hit by rain and wind as storm clouds hug the US East Coast.
The National Weather Service (NWS) weather forecast said a “surface low” is moving across the northern Florida peninsula today.
“Expect showers and thunderstorms, with heavy rainfall possible, to accompany this system during the Thanksgiving Holiday and into Friday across northern and central Florida,” it said.
WLRN-FM warned: “A storm system moving across Florida on Thanksgiving Day might seem like a tropical storm to some.
“Relentless rain and gusty winds are expected from the Nature Coast to the First Coast from a non-tropical area of low pressure moving in from the Gulf of Mexico. The unsettled weather, while not as intense, will drift across central and South Florida Friday.”
National Weather Service Miami-South Florida said: “Happy Thanksgiving! A stormy day expected across South Florida.
“Some strong storms are possible over portions of South Florida today and tonight.”
AccuWeather warned that downpours would hit Florida on Thanksgiving but conditions would improve by the weekend as rain pushes out into the Atlantic Ocean.
Renee Duff, an AccuWeather meteorologist, said: “A system sweeping in from the Gulf of Mexico will enhance downpours into Black Friday.
“The heaviest downpours are likely to occur on Thanksgiving Day across northern portions of the state. Some waterspouts are possible along the Gulf Coast.”
