Best Hotels in United States (USA)

Georgetown's tony boutiques, all flush with paisley prints, and charming sidewalk cafés already offer a welcome respite from the bustle of downtown D.C.—but the Melrose Hotel does the neighborhood one better. Far from staid or traditional, this boutique pad etched out near the Foggy Bottom metro stop offers up lots of eclectic little surprises, whether it's the bright green accents in the upholstery, or the walls smoothed over in bits of the U.S. Constitution. Even the portraits of founding fathers seem to look on approvingly—such decorative flourishes never veer into tacky territory. Take advantage of the Molton Brown toiletries, and the great location—and let the warm, receptive staff do the rest.

Georgetown's upscale shops and charming sidewalk cafés already offer a respite from the bustle of the nation's capital, but the
Melrose Georgetown Hotel  takes it a step further. Far from traditional, this boutique hotel near the Foggy Bottom metro stop offers plenty of eclectic surprises, like vibrant green upholstery accents and bits of the U.S. Constitution papering the walls. The portraits of founding fathers give a nod to the city's history without feeling stuffy, either. Take advantage of the Molton Brown toiletries and great location—and let the accommodating staff take care of everything else.

Set right off trolley-lined King Street, The Restoration, a contemporary 54-suite boutique hotel, has clean, cool blues and chocolate browns on linens and windows to offset exposed brick walls. It’s not what you’d expect to see in the Holy City’s candy-colored Historic District, but it’s welcome nonetheless. Spacious rooms, sky-high wood beam ceilings, exposed ductwork, and eclectic, modern furnishings are mixed with subtle tributes to the city’s roots, like stand-alone mirrors carved in the shape of cathedral windows and a lantern in the shape of a pineapple, the city’s unofficial emblem. Inside the rooms, look out for Beekman 1802 products, complimentary breakfast delivered in a picnic basket, iPads and bicycles on loan, and even a nail bar where you can change polish colors to match your new outfit. Dinner at the Watch means killer rooftop views, plus hush puppies and local brews.

Famed artist Lon Megargee created the Hermosa Inn in the 1930s as an escape for his friends before opening its doors to outside guests. Today, the Paradise Valley resort and its 43 hacienda-style casitas attract both vacationers on the hunt for peace and quiet, and foodies, too. Lon’s, the on-site restaurant, incorporates Southwestern techniques like smoking and wood-grilling into its New American cuisine—try the ever-popular Himalayan salt-seared Ahi Tuna, served with cilantro, pickled onion, and ceviche sauce, and pair it with one of the more than 500 wines in the cellar.

Boston’s Back Bay offers plenty of charm in its brownstone streets, but Mandarin Oriental brings an Eastern sophistication to the New England. Start with the hotel’s swanky Bar Boulud restaurant; guests can start with a strong cocktail and a charcuterie spread—though we recommend holding out for a Gloucester lobster scramble at brunch to taste New England's best. Need an extra dose of relaxation? Book one of the Lifestyle rooms, outfitted with bamboo floors and a daybed, just steps from the hotel's excellent spa.

This hotel near the White House hits all the design high notes—it seamlessly blends Italian Renaissance–style design with Corinthian, Doric, and Ionic columns, walnut wainscoting, and ceiling treatments with Elizabethan, Italian, and Tudor motifs. Aside from feeling like you're sleeping in an interior decorator's fantasy digs—the toile treatments are the stuff of dreams—the hotel supplies posh Etro amenities in its marbled bathrooms, and Bose music systems in its guest rooms. Make sure to book a Federal Suite (if you're hankering for some epic views of the White House from your private balcony, that is) and round out your visit by dining on broiled Maryland-style crab cakes at Lafayette Restaurant, or sipping a pear martini at Off The Record Bar.

this hotel's toile treatments are the stuff of an interior decorator's dreams, seamlessly blending Italian Renaissance style with Corinthian, Doric, and Ionic columns, walnut wainscoting, and ceiling treatments with elegant Elizabethan, Italian, and Tudor motifs. It might just fool you into forgetting there's no such thing as U.S. royalty. Posh Etro amenities line the marbled bathrooms, and Bose music systems fill the room with the music of your choice. A Federal Suite assures you a direct view of the White House from you private balcony, and when you need a night cap, a pear martini at Off The Record, the hotel's parlor room-esque bar, will gladly do the trick.
The Kimpton EPIC Hotel, housed in an elliptical 52-story curved glass tower, is just the right distance from the crowds. It sits on the water, where the Miami River meets Biscayne Bay, removed from the frenzy of downtown. Each sophisticated room—though closer to a suite in size—has its own private balcony, and most enjoy memorable views of the bay or city. Go for a swim in the rooftop pool up on the 16th floor (the other pool is reserved for hotel residents), and reserve a private cabana for extra seclusion. *Editor's note: The pool is currently under renovation, and is only open Saturday and Sunday. The hotel is providing gratis transportation to its sister property, the Kimpton Surfcomber, for guests who'd like to use the pool during the week (it's about a 15-minute drive).* Kimpton EPIC Hotel, Miami, FL

Next to Umstead State Park and ten minutes from Raleigh, the Umstead Hotel and Spa has 150 rooms furnished in golds and greens, ribbon windows from floor to ceiling, and balconies with top-notch views. Our recommendation? Take lunch on the lakeside terrace at the hotel's signature Forbes Five Star restaurant, Herons—the lobster roll comes on a buttery bun with house-made pickles and chips. The spa is the main event, though; take a deep breath in the outdoor meditation courtyard before settling in for a moisturizing buttermilk and honey wrap or a deep tissue massage.

Opened in December 2015, Faena Hotel Miami Beach is the larger-than-life hotel component of Alan Faena’s billion-dollar Faena District Miami Beach, a multi-block reinvention of the historic buildings from 32nd to 36th streets along Collins Avenue, with residential and retail components. The 169-key beachfront property preserves the façade of its original incarnation, the circa 1948 Saxony Hotel, while transforming the inside into a bastion of eclectic modernism. Faena takes us on surreal journey down the rabbit hole across his theatrical common areas. The lobby, dubbed the “Cathedral,” glitters with gold-leafed columns and floor-to-ceiling murals, teeming with imagery of wild animals and religious allegories embedded on deep red canvas. Animal-print furnishings, coral-coated lamps, and eye-popping “Tropicalia” works by Gonzalo Fuenmayor abound. The 22,000 square feet, bohemian chic Tierra Santa Healing House spa, a bi-level 220-seat dinner theater, and prolific art installations add layer-upon-layer to this personality-driven complex. Restored terrazzo floors in the hallways lead to glamorous rooms and suites, whose sea foam and maraschino interiors pay homage to Art Deco’s later years, modeled after the Saxony’s original appointments and Faena’s personal collection of period furnishings.

Faena Hotel Miami Beach, FL

To call
Faena Hotel Miami Beach over the top doesn't begin to describe it. Common areas at this glossy beachfront pad (designed in part by Baz Luhrmann and his wife, Catherine Martin) tend toward the theatrical; the lobby, called the “Cathedral,” glitters with gold-leafed columns and floor-to-ceiling murals of wild animals and religious allegories. Likewise, a 22,000-square-foot spa, dubbed "Tierra Santa Healing House," a 220-seat, bi-level dinner theater, and prolific art installations don't at all feel out of place.
