the restoration, a 54-suite, contemporary boutique hotel, debuted in January 2016 just off trolley-lined King Street. It’s not what you’d expect to see in the Holy City’s candy-colored Historic District, but the exposed brick walls and eclectic, modern furnishings welcome visitors with a new twist on Southern hospitality. Inside the rooms, look out for Beekman 1802 products, complimentary breakfast delivered in a picnic basket, and iPads and bicycles on loan. Dinner at the Watch means killer rooftop views paired with hush puppies and local brews.
The Hermosa Inn, Paradise Valley, AZ
Famed artist Lon Megargee created the
Hermosa Inn
in the 1930s as an escape for his friends before opening its doors to outside guests. Today, the Paradise Valley resort and its 43 hacienda-style casitas attract both vacationers on the hunt for peace and quiet, and foodies, too. Lon’s, the on-site restaurant, incorporates Southwestern techniques like smoking and wood-grilling into its New American cuisine—try the ever-popular Himalayan salt-seared Ahi Tuna, served with cilantro, pickled onion, and ceviche sauce, and pair it with one of the more than 500 wines in the cellar.
Mandarin Oriental, Boston, MA
Boston’s Back Bay offers plenty of charm in its brownstone streets, but
Mandarin Oriental,
brings an Eastern sophistication to the New England. Start with the hotel’s swanky Bar Boulud restaurant; guests can start with a strong cocktail and a charcuterie spread—though we recommend holding out for a Gloucester lobster scramble at brunch to taste New England's best. Need an extra dose of relaxation? Book one of the Lifestyle rooms, outfitted with bamboo floors and a daybed, just steps from the hotel's excellent spa.
The Hay-Adams, Washington, D.C.
this hotel's toile treatments are the stuff of an interior decorator's dreams, seamlessly blending Italian Renaissance style with Corinthian, Doric, and Ionic columns, walnut wainscoting, and ceiling treatments with elegant Elizabethan, Italian, and Tudor motifs. It might just fool you into forgetting there's no such thing as U.S. royalty. Posh Etro amenities line the marbled bathrooms, and Bose music systems fill the room with the music of your choice. A Federal Suite assures you a direct view of the White House from you private balcony, and when you need a night cap, a pear martini at Off The Record, the hotel's parlor room-esque bar, will gladly do the trick.
Kimpton EPIC Hotel, Miami, FL
The
Kimpton EPIC Hotel, housed in an elliptical 52-story curved glass tower, sits just the right distance from the crowds, along the water where the Miami River meets Biscayne Bay. Each sophisticated room—close to a suite in size—has its own private balcony, and most enjoy memorable views of the bay or city. Go for a swim in the rooftop pool on the 16th floor, and reserve a private cabana for extra seclusion.
Editor's note: the pool is currently under renovation, and is only open Sat.-Sun. The hotel is providing free transportation during the week to its sister property, the Kimpton Surfcomber, for guests who'd like to use the pool (it's about a 15-minute drive)
The Umstead Hotel and Spa, Cary, NC
Next to Umstead State Park and 10 minutes from Raleigh, the
Umstead Hotel and Spa comprises 150 rooms furnished with golds and greens, ribbon windows from floor to ceiling, and balconies with top-notch views. Our recommendation? Lunch on the lakeside terrace at the hotel's signature restaurant, Herons. We recommend the lobster roll, served on a buttery bun with house-made pickles and chips. The spa is the main event, though; stroll through the outdoor meditation courtyard before settling in for a moisturizing buttermilk and honey wrap or a deep tissue massage.
Faena Hotel Miami Beach, FL
To call
Faena Hotel Miami Beach over the top doesn't begin to describe it. Common areas at this glossy beachfront pad (designed in part by Baz Luhrmann and his wife, Catherine Martin) tend toward the theatrical; the lobby, called the “Cathedral,” glitters with gold-leafed columns and floor-to-ceiling murals of wild animals and religious allegories. Likewise, a 22,000-square-foot spa, dubbed "Tierra Santa Healing House," a 220-seat, bi-level dinner theater, and prolific art installations don't at all feel out of place.
